For anyone travelling to Tanzania with little time but the desire to see the most he/she can see in the shortest time possible then a one day safari in Ngorongoro will be the most rewarding of any African safari. This is due to one obvious reason; that Ngorongoro Crater has the highest concentration of wild animals in a natural habitat. Nowhere else in Africa would you see wildlife in such a close range and that has awarded the Ngorongoro Crater the name’8th Wonder of the world ’or the ‘Eden of Africa’. The Ngorongoro Crater is so called Crater but is actually the largest unbroken Caldera in the world. The Crater is approximately 265 Km square with only 19 Kilometers in the diameter. Some document it as being 21 Kilometers in Diameter. The Crater harbors an estimated 30,000 animals, a whooping number of animals in such a small area.

The proximity of Ngorongoro Crater from Arusha in particular makes it possible to go for a day trip at Ngorongoro, but it is important to note that leaving Arusha early enough in the morning is a good idea. If you want to make the most of your time in Ngorongoro, then it is good to leave Arusha as early as 6.00 Am and arrive by 09.30 – 10.00 in the morning. That way one can do game drives up to even 3.00 Pm – 4.00 Pm and drive back to Arusha arriving by 6.30 – 07.30 in the evening. The golden rule here being the earlier you leave Arusha in the morning the better.

Ngorongoro Crater is home to many animal species that can be easily spotted including elephants that roam the Elerai forests, cheetahs, lions, leopards, hartebeest, resident wildebeests, warthogs, jackals, zebras, hyenas, elands, grants and Thompsons gazelles, mountain reedbucks, buffaloes and many more; but more amazingly the Big five that can be spotted in one day with a little luck. Ngorongoro is also a birders haven so a trip to Ngorongoro is also very interesting to both the animal lovers and bird watchers alike.
