12 Days Birding Safari in Uganda

Birding is one of the newer activities that are gaining its footprints in Uganda. There are many birders that have sought Uganda as a birding destination because according to statistics, Uganda has so many bird species which are equivalent to those found in Europe as a continent.  This safari shall take you to several birding spots around the country and you shall be able to search for your favourite bird species. To better enjoy this wonderful adventurous safari, I would kindly request that you to make a list of the birds that you would love to view and the places where to find them in Uganda such that you discuss with us while we are aware of your expectations.  All our safari itineraries are easily customizable according to the core needs of our clients. Just ask for whatever you want and surely, we shall discuss all the possibilities of integrating it in your itinerary. However you should know that some of the changes made may reflect in the final price of the tour.

Day 1: Birding at Entebbe Botanical Gardens

This safari assumes that you are either arriving into Uganda via Entebbe International airport or that you are already in Uganda and you reside in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Depending on the your arrival time or point of pick up, our company representative shall come, pick you ,and transfer you to Entebbe botanical gardens for a birding experience. The gardens are blessed with various species of birds which include white Chinned Prinia, Fork Tailed Drongo, African hobby, Ross’s Turaco, orange weaver, and others species. You shall rest and dine at one of the hotels in Entebbe.

Day 2: Birding at Mabamba

There is no way you can come to Uganda for birding and you miss out on Mabamba. Mabamba swamp is located 50 km from Kampala. On arrival at the swamp, you shall be canoed by a specialized guide deep into the swamp in search of various bird species. It is a sure deal to spot the shoebill stork however you shall look for other species as well which include the African Water rail, Weyns, Goliath, White winged warbler, Grey Herons, Squaco, Papyrus Gonolek and other species. Later, transfer back to Kampala for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Mburo National park

Early in the morning, transfer to Lake Mburo National park which is the closest national park to Kampala. You shall spend much of the time enjoying an en-route birding. In Uganda, there are many species that reside outside the park. Be ready to view some of those bird species on your way to Lake Mburo national park. You shall arrive in the afternoon, relax and prepare for the next day’s whole day birding experience.

Day 4:  Whole day birding at Lake Mburo National Park

The park is blessed with several water bodies which attracts so many species of birds. Early in the morning, you shall proceed to the park for a morning birding experience. You shall move on foot while witnessing several species of birds. Morning hours are always perfect to view the birds as they leave their nests to start the day. You will be awakened to several experiences like enjoying little birds being fed by their mothers. Later, you shall move back to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, you shall do birding drive, where you shall drive through the park in search for birds. There are so many species that you are likely to witness and our focus shall be upon the Lesser Blue Eared Starling, Red Billed Wood Hope, Tabora Cisticola, Buff Bellied Warbler, Red Faced Barbet, Coquin Francolin, and others. Late in the afternoon, you shall do a boat cruise to witness other bird species like giant kingfisher, African fin foot and others.

 Day 5: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable national park

After a wonderful sleep and breakfast, you will wake up to another adventure-transferring to Bwindi Impenetrable national park.  You shall spend part of the day driving to Bwindi Impenetrable national park. Along the way, you shall drive past rolling hills of Kigezi and other iconic landscapes. You might make occasional stops along the way depending on the birding species that you shall encounter. You shall arrive in Bwindi in the evening and later, transfer to your lodge for your dinner and overnight

Day 6 : Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable national park

Bwindi national park is known for gorilla trekking however the park is also a haven for birding. There are over 350 species of birds within the park and most the species are endemic to the Albertine rift valley. Wake up like any other day and after breakfast, you shall transfer to the park to start looking out for bird species. Some of the species you can’t miss out include: Kivu Ground Thrush, White-tailed Blue Monarch, Bar-tailed Trogon, Yellow-eyed black Fly-catcher, Rusty-faced woodland. Later transfer to lodge, relax, dine and overnight.

Day 7: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park

The birding safari is still on and by now, I know that you would have encountered many species. Early in the morning, after breakfast, you shall transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park passing via Ishasha sector to view some tree climbing lions. Arrive late in the afternoon and check in at your lodge.

Day 8: Birding in Queen Elizabeth national park

After breakfast, you shall transfer to the park for birding. You shall spend the whole day looking out for species like African Spoonbill, Saddle-billed, African Skimmer, Water Thick-knee, Banded Snake Eagles and Bateleur, Rufous-napped, Slender-billed, Black-headed Gonolek. The famous game drive along the park shall even allow you to spot other wildlife such as Elephants, leopards, Ugandan kobs, Zebras, Lions, Oribi, bushbuck, and others.  You shall drive to the lodge and get ready for a simple night game drive in search of night species.

Day 9: Transfer to Kibale National park

After a great relaxation, you shall drive to Kibale national park from Queen Elizabeth national park. This shall offer you unique en-route bird species to watch out for. Arrive in Kibale in the afternoon, relax and make preparations for the next day. Transfer to the lodge for dinner and overnight

 Day 10: Birding in Kibale national park

After an excellent day, you shall now head to one of the best rainforest in Uganda to search out for other bird species in the park. Some of the birding species include Green and Afep Pigeon, Brown and Scaly Breasted Illadopsis, Marsh Tchagra, Green-backed Twinspot, Blue-headed Coucal, Bicoloured Mannikin, Roufous Flycatcher, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Long-tailed Cuckoo and many others. Later transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Transfer to Murchison falls national park

Early in the morning after breakfast, you shall transfer to Murchison falls national park but en-route expect to view some bird species. Arrive in Murchison falls and check in your lodge, relax, dine and get ready for the next day.

Day 12: Birding in Murchison falls national park

Spend the whole day birding in Murchison falls national park. After breakfast, you shall do a game drive and boat cruise while searching for various bird species. At first you shall do a game drive and after lunch, you shall travel by boat to the bottom of the falls in search of various bird species. Expect to see Egyptian Plover, Northern Red Bishop, Brown-backed Woodpecker, Brown-rumped Bunting, Lesser Blue Eared, Spotted Morning thrush, Silverbird, Bat Hawk, African Black Scimitarbill, Red-necked falcon, Splendid and Ruppel’s Long Tailed Starling, White-fronted Black Chat, sunbird and others. Later transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day13: Transfer to Kampala

After breakfast, and moving back to the park in search of the missed bird species; you shall transfer back to Kampala to mark the end of the spectacular birding safari in Uganda
