5 Days Mt Kenya Climbing Using Sirimon – Chogoria Route
The sirimon route is one of the most famous routes which are used during the summit attempt of Mount Kenya. Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa which makes it an ideal mountain for your climbing challenge. During your journey, you shall be provided with the best porters, cooks and other necessary help to ensure that we enjoy climbing this wonderful mountain.
5 days of Mt Kenya Trekking via Sirimon – Chogoria Route – Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Nanyuki
This climbing expeditions starts and ends in Nairobi. You shall meet and greet our tour guide from our agreed upon pickup point usually in the morning. Afterwards, you shall be driven to Nanyuki. You will arrive in Nanyuki around lunch time. You will check in your lodge and have some lunch. The rest of the day is just spent around this area and it is vital for your acclimatization.
Day 2: Sirimon park gate- Old Moses camp. Altitude: 3300m Distance: 9km
Early in the morning, you shall wake up and have a wonderful breakfast. Afterwards, you will drive to the sirimon park gate to register with the park authorities. It is at this point that you shall meet the rest of the group members who are going to climb with you. During climbing, you always need the help of porters, cooks and mountain guides. After the registration, you shall start hiking through the rainforest until the Old Moses Camp. Upon arrival, you shall rest, have dinner and take a deep sleep waiting for tomorrow’s activities.
Day 3: Old Moses Camp- Shipton camp. Altitude: 4200m, Distance: 7km
Early in the morning after breakfast, you shall continue your climbing experience by hiking from Old Moses camp to shipton camp. The distance is about 7km and upon arrival, you will start to feel the altitude sickness. This is the last day before climbing to the summit and therefore all the necessary preparations should be made at shipton camp.
Day 4: Shipton camp – Point Lenana (4985m) and descend to Chogoria.
The highest peaks of Mount Kenya are Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. During your climbing safari, your major interest is Point Lenana. When at the shipton camp, you shall go to bed early and wake up at around 3am to begin your summit attempt. With simple snacks, you will begin hiking to point Lenana and you are likely to arrive at 6:30. Upon arrival, you shall feel the joy of having taken this brave climbing experience, you will take as many photos as you can and later, you will begin to descend after sunrise to Mintos hut for breakfast and a simple repose. Later, you will continue to the chogoria bandas and campsite. Dinner and overnight at the campsite
Day 5: Chogoria – Nairobi
Early in the morning after breakfast, you shall continue descending to chogoria, a distance of 32km. After walking for 15 km, you shall meet the safari vehicle which shall drive you for the rest of the journey until Nairobi or head north to Samburu National Park or Ol Pejeta Conservancy for wildlife safari.
